Last week, we learned that the first thing we need to do to walk in Christ by faith is to “keep seeking things above.” I love verse two of chapter 3 “Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth” (NASB). That phrase “set your mind” can also be translated “think.” The same word is used in Philippians 2:5 “Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus.” Basically, Paul said in Philippians (and Colossians) “think like Jesus thought.” Wow! How do we do that? By concentrating on Him and not the things of the world!
Do you know what the top 10 things that were searched on the internet in 2013? From ten to one; North Korea, Play Station 4, Samsung Galaxy S4, Royal Baby, Boston Marathon, Harlem Shake, Corey Monteith, IPhone 5s, Paul Walker, and Nelson Mandela. Really? Look at some of things that people concentrated on: two phones and a dance (I assume the Harlem Shake is a dance) made the top 10! Notice, who didn’t not make the top 10 – God!
So, Paul was pretty clear in verses one and two of Colossians 3 – “Seek things above; do not seek things of the earth.” Now, I want to take you back to the end of verse one, “where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.” Remember, the theme of the Book of Colossians is the supremacy of Jesus Christ. Here is another way Paul declared that Jesus is supreme – Jesus is at the very right hand of God the Father. Recall in the Bible, the right hand is the place of power and the place of significance. Who is presently in the most powerful and significance place of God the Father? Jesus Christ the Son! That is another reason why we should be seeking Him! Reminisce from chapter 1 about Jesus – He is before all things, He created all things, He sustains all things, and He is God! And in chapter 2 – all wisdom and knowledge is found in Jesus, and now in chapter 3, we learn that He is at the right hand of God the Father. When you put all this together, the real question is why would we not be seeking Him? He is so worthy for us to seek Him with everything we have.
So, what are some practical ways in which we can seek Him? Well, the primary way that God speaks to us and the way we learn about Him is through the Word of God. Listen to Jesus’ words on this subject in John 8:31b-32“If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” Also, in any relationship, communication is a two way street. So, we need to be talking to God. Are you talking to God throughout the day? Prayer is not just a morning and/or nighttime experience. You can talk to God all the time – even when you are working! Remember, our relationship with God is moment by moment! Another way that God speaks to me and where I am encouraged to seek Him more is through other believers. I have people in my life I spend time with and they make me want to seek God more. Their walk with Christ encourages my faith so much. I will end with praise. We need to be lifting God up in praise. When we are praising God, we are concentrating on Him and putting ourselves in the rightful place – submission to Him. Of course, there are countless ways we can seek God. The only question is, will we? See you next week!
